We were unable to pull onto the shoulder immediately due to highway construction. We eventually pulled over and stopped the vehicle. We immediately popped the hood to check the source of the smoke and there was a fire coming from behind the engine with visible flames. The flames were burning and we could smell a strong chemical / oil burning smell. Fortunately we had a fire extinguisher and extinguished the flames quite quickly. We were towed off the highway and our insurance then towed us home. On inspection it was determined that the transfer case (PTU) had failed causing a catastrophic failure and a fluid thermal event caused by pressurized, superheated oil directly spraying onto the scorching exhaust pipe sitting right behind the engine block, triggering the immediate underhood fire. There were no warning lights on the dashboard and the car had been meticulously maintained. As serious PTU failures are common in 2015 Jeep Cherokees, I reported this immediately to Jeep, they sent a technician to inspect and he confirmed that the transfer case had failed, causing a fluid leak ignited by the hot exhaust. There are no recalls attached to my VIN and I am fighting with Jeep/Stellantis for a repair since this is a known and acknowledged issue across this model. Upon inspection, it was determined that the headrest in the driver seat had “deployed” unprovoked. Upon searching google / nhtsa for this issue I found that there were issues with other models that had extended warranties. I then contacted the vehicle owner and asked if they had received any notice about this issue. Vehicle owner replied that the passenger side headrest had already deployed unexpectedly while driving down the road, almost causing an accident, and was repaired at a dealership in March 2024. Vehicle owner also stated (and sent email proof) that the dealership stated that they “could not replace the driver side headrest if it was not deployed because they would be charged by the manufacturer if they turned in an undeployed headrest.” There were no lights, warnings or indications that the headrest was going to deploy. The vehicle had been returned to me four days earlier, after approximately 2.5 months at Preferred Chrysler Dodge Jeep of Muskegon, MI for a timing chain replacement. After the fire, I found that the coolant reservoir hose had come off its fitting, and the hose barb appears to have been broken and the hose pushed back on. Several under-hood trim fasteners were also missing. My best assessment is that coolant sprayed onto the hot turbo/exhaust components and ignited. While I was traveling at approximately 45 miles per hour, another driver operating a pickup truck pulled out of a grocery store parking lot directly into my path of travel. The truck entered the roadway in front of my vehicle, leaving me unable to avoid a collision. The front of my vehicle struck the side of the pickup truck, resulting in a significant T-bone collision. Following the accident, the driver of the pickup truck admitted that he had been eating a breakfast burrito and had looked to his right but failed to look to his left before pulling into the roadway. VEHICLE DAMAGE AND AIRBAG FAILURE The collision resulted in approximately $20,000 in damage to my vehicle. Despite the substantial front-end impact and the approximate speed at which I was traveling before the collision, the airbags in my vehicle did not deploy. The failure of the airbags to deploy during this collision raises serious concerns regarding the proper operation of the vehicle’s supplemental restraint system and whether the airbags functioned as designed. I am requesting that the circumstances of this accident be reviewed to determine whether the failure of the airbags to deploy was the result of a defect, malfunction, or other failure of the vehicle’s safety systems.","canonical_url":"https://api.morvs.ai/vehicle-complaint/2256916"},{"cmplid":"2256935","date_received":"2026-10-14","make":"JEEP","model":"GRAND CHEROKEE L","model_year":2021,"deaths":0,"injured":0,"fire":0,"crash":1,"component_desc":"SUSPENSION","description":"Unknown","canonical_url":"https://api.morvs.ai/vehicle-complaint/2256935"},{"cmplid":"2256732","date_received":"2026-10-14","make":"JEEP","model":"GRAND CHEROKEE","model_year":2015,"deaths":0,"injured":1,"fire":0,"crash":1,"component_desc":"AIR BAGS","description":"The contact owned a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
