On October 15, 2008, EPA received a demoltion notification from an asbestos contractor via U.S. Mail for demolition work at the United States Naval Station - Newport. The notification was dated October 14, 2008 and the demolition start date was October 13, 2008. The notification was not given to EPA at least 10 working days before the asbestos stripping or removal work or any other activity began, which is in violation of the Asbestos NESHAP. The Compliance Order ensures that United States Naval Station - Newport takes immediate steps to conduct business in full compliance with the Asbestos NESHAP. It also requires United States Naval Station - Newport to submit information about the project to EPA within 10 business days of receipt of the Order.
