On July 12, 2013, the District of Idaho entered a consent decree to address numerous violations of the Clean Water Act by Jerome Cheese Company at its cheese-producing facility in Jerome, Idaho. Between July 2006 and August 2010, discharges from the facility exceeded the phosphorus effluent limitations in its NPDES permit at least 2,866 times. The company also violated its ammonia limits and failed to notify EPA of its violations. The Jerome Cheese Company facility discharges to Lateral 12, an irrigation canal that eventually discharges to the Snake River, which is water quality-limited for phosphorus. In August 2010, the facility came into compliance with its permit and has remained in compliance. Jerome Cheese Company has paid a penalty of $304,000.
