UNIFIRST CORP

On October 11, 2012, Region 1 issued a Consent Agreement and Final Order (CAFO) to UniFirst Corporation, a Massachusetts-based industrial laundry company with a facility in Lebanon, New Hampshire. This CAFO resolves EPA’s claims that detergent discharged from UniFirst’s Lebanon facility caused pass-through at the City of Lebanon’s publicly owned treatment works (POTW) and foaming on the Connecticut River and that UniFirst failed to immediately notify the POTW of the detergent discharge, in violation of Section 307 of the Clean Water Act and 40 C.F.R. Part 403. Additionally, this CAFO resolves EPA’s claim that UniFirst discharged wastewater with a pH of less than 5.0 standard units to the POTW in violation of 40 C.F.R. § 403.5. UniFirst will pay a penalty of $48,000.
