On December 7, 2020, DOJ, on behalf of EPA, filed a civil proof of claim in a U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Texas against Chesapeake Appalachia LLC (CALLC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Chesapeake Energy Corporation. DOJ filed the proof of claim to preserve and protect the rights of the United States, following Chesapeake Energy, Inc.'s June 2020 filing for Chapter 11 reorganization in the Bankruptcy Court. The proof of claim describes the government's claims for recovery of civil penalties, equitable remedies, and injunctive relief obligations in connection with the discharge of pollutants into waters of the U.S. at properties owned and/or operated by CALLC in PA and WV.
