## Abstract

Project Summary
The AnVIL environment uses leading cloud-scale cyberinfrastructure as the foundation supporting the most
widely-used analysis environments and frameworks vetted by NHGRI researchers. The overall goals of this
ODSS supplement proposal are to enhance the user experience and increase interoperability, data access and
sharing, and data visibility. To accomplish these objectives, we propose seven aims, each tackling components
of data access, shareability, and visibility. In combination, all aims will significantly improve the user experience
in AnVIL. Aim 1. FHIR work: In order to address challenges in searching and exchanging data across
biomedical research systems, we are expanding work with FHIR to include creating an AnVIL FHIR app and
stand up single user tenants for FHIR for users to easily load their EMR data into AnVIL. Aim 2. Terra as a
GA4GH Passport Broker: To modernize and expand data access permissions, the AnVIL will harness the
power and standardization of RAS. Further, enabling Terra as a GA4GH passport broker, we combine access
control through whitelists, dbGaP authorizations, and other passport brokers to greatly improve data access
control. Aim 3. Terra supporting DRS 1.x as a server: In an effort to improve AnVIL’s capacity to onboard
and use data within other partners, we will continue expansion of DRS support in Terra. This work aligns AnVIL
in the larger ecosystem of trusted partners. Aim 4. NCPI Portal and Dataset indexing: To expand data
visibility, the NCPI Dataset Catalog will build an automated mechanism to interface directly with the platform
APIs to allow querying and to retrieve the study information and associated metadata. Direct access to the
platform's FHIR server will reduce the manual effort and hence improve the quality and timeliness of the data.
Aim 5. Standardization of "apps" across Platforms: To ease deployment of complex applications within
AnVIL thereby moving toward a comprehensive platform, AnVIL will extend the app standardization created in
BioData Catalyst with the Kubernetes support to dramatically increase flexibility and extensibility of the AnVIL
platform. Aim 6. FHIR Codeathon: In an effort to engage NCPI platforms and scientific community members
in developing tools that leverage FHIR-represented research data and APIs, we will host a series of Virtuaal
FHIR Code-a-thons. Aim 7. NIH DUOS Pilot Expansion: To address scalability challenges, the AnVIL will
extend the DUOS pilot program to five new groups allowing us to pull together qualitative information on DUOS
pilot expansion that will promote the use and adoption of DUOS by Data Access Committees.
