Narrative

The column-mounted transmission shift linkage on this 1992 Ford Econoline E-150 failed to fully engage the Park position in the transmission. When the driver moved the column shifter to Park, the worn linkage rod did not transmit sufficient travel to engage the parking pawl inside the transmission. The vehicle remained in Neutral despite the shift indicator showing Park. The component may be available for inspection upon request. With no parking pawl engaged, the unoccupied vehicle rolled freely and ran over a bystander who was assisting with the stalled vehicle. She sustained catastrophic injuries including full-thickness degloving of both kneecaps, degloving of the dorsal hand, and a massive hip hematoma requiring trauma-level hospital care. The vehicle also struck a second person nearby, who was later hospitalized with injuries consistent with being run over by the vehicle. The incident was investigated by law enforcement. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by a dealer or Ford specifically for the linkage condition. The driver reported the vehicle had been experiencing ongoing ignition switch problems causing intermittent no-start conditions prior to this incident. No warning lamp specific to the shift linkage was present — the shift indicator showed Park normally, giving no visible indication of the linkage failure.
